Hazardous Duty A Presidential Agent Novel WEB Griffin William E Butterworth IV Books

I have been a fan of all of W.E.B Griffins military and spy themed novels but this one falls well short of everything I have read before. Gone are the intrigue, mystery, and action of previous books, this book is confusing and pointless, nothing happens, nothing is resolved and the story lines just end with no real reason. In the end of the book Griffin puts an afterword that he was having a hard time writing this novel so he tried to make it funny like MASH, he failed in my eyes, this book was a waste of time and I wish I had not pre-ordered it.

Hazardous Duty A Presidential Agent Novel WEB Griffin William E Butterworth IV Books Reviews

The disclaimer at the end of the book should have appeared at the start, at least that would have given me warning of what was to come. Not only was the story line changed as it often is in WEBG work (ie, how Charlie got Max) this nonsensical trash was nearly unreadable. I want my money back!!
Sorry I bought it. Sorry to give it two stars for the humor before it turned to absurdity. I've been a fan of his books for years. I swallowed his time shift in the Badge of Honor series. I swallowed his re telling of the back story for the first 20% of every book. But I held off buying his last novel until I was able to thumb through it at a bookstore-and decided not to buy it at all. Wish I'd done that with this one. I understand his expressed disappointment in the postscript. But I feel he should have ditched the project until he could have come to terms with the failures of officers such as a former General, former DCI. I will buy no more of his books before checking them out nor can I recommend them to others. Ignore the cover, nothing that exciting happens in this book.
Just to add a postscript...wish I'd given this book just ONE star. And in a couple of months Griffin is bringing out another book starting another series. I. Will. Not. Buy. It. I may/may not read a library copy, but WEB Griffin and son will not see another penny of mine.
Apparently I lied to myself since I bought Top Secret. I still hate this book. I still feel betrayed. I still feel that Griffin & Company ripped me off on this book.
Let's just drop the lengthy prologue and say at the outset do NOT waste your time or money with "Hazardous Duty". If there

I have been a fan of a few of W.E.B. Griffin's various series, and this "Presidential Agent" series started out with such promise. However, as the series has gone on, it became tougher to get through the novels. Increasingly he was spending 80-85% of the book in long, drawn-out expository and re-hashing of Charley Castillo's background - something unnecessary for those already following the series - leaving ever-smaller last acts to get to action and tying up a storyline.

In "Hazardous Duty", it's a whole lot of nothing. At first I thought that there was going to be yet another long exposition and some sort of action at the end. But on and on it went, and before long, I began to realize that there was going to be no plot, no action to push the overall series storyline along, and no "payoff" for slogging through the novel. By the time I got to the end, I was simply insulted to the point of being legitimately angry.

In the afterword, Mr. Griffin tries to explain how he felt a little disengaged - almost disinterested - in coming up with the next installment of the "Presidential Agent" series, and so thought he might try to write a "M*A*S*H"-style novel for this series. However, he failed miserably in that regard, because there was no humor in any part of "Hazardous Duty".

I truly hope that Mr. Griffin, his son, or his publisher are paying attention to this - and the other - harsh reviews of "Hazardous Duty", because I want to conclude by saying to them all that they all screwed over his loyal, paying readers in a big way. If he was indeed disinterested in writing this installment of the "Presidential Agent" series, he should very well have told his publisher he would stop this series, concentrate on his other ongoing series, and perhaps return to this series at a later date when he had something fully formed. He and his publisher should be ashamed for wasting our time, and for collecting our hard-earned money on this blatantly lazy mess of an effort. I don't know how anybody in good conscience could do that. Mr. Griffin, you have officially lost me from your reader base once and for all.
Glad I purchased the kindle version, otherwise it would have been a waste of paper. This is the first negative review I have posted, the book is poorly written has very little new material and issues with typos no action at all. I really wish I could request a refund.
Anyone who has enjoyed the many wonderful and well plotted books by Mr. Griffin should avoid reading this. It is basically a re cap of the previous Presidential Agent Novels with a very weak and confusing story line attached. Even Mr. Griffin 's explanation at the end of the story of why he wrote this so poorly doesn't make sense. A big disappointment and I feel like I've been swindled out of money and time. As a huge fan of W.E.B. Griffin, I automatically purchase anything that he writes, I'll never make that mistake again.
First let me say I have been a huge WEB Griffin fan for many years. I own virtually every series and every book! Sadly this will be the last one I every buy! Since he has taken on "Co-Writers" the quality has diminished greatly. This last book, Hazardous Duty, was the last straw for me. It was the poorest excuse for a book and were I WEB Griffin, I wouldn't want my name associated with it!
I received the book on at midnight, finished it at about 4pm (with a couple of breaks in there for naps.) I love the author's books (and let me clarify here, I've read most of them, starting with Brotherhood of War in the late 80s,) but was extremely let down by this one. And yes, I read the 'afterward' and the author's explanation. I'm sorry, I just can't get behind the reasoning to turn out a shoddy book like this.

Sadly disappointed. I'll be extremely wary of the next book.
