This is a collection of multiple short stories. Each one is unique in how the author used different settings and ideas to create a horror story. These stories reminded me of the ones I read as a kid only for an adult. Because the stories are short, the experience lasts longer. The writing is short and concise in that the read is given only what they need for the story. There were several that I would have loved to read more about just because of the intricacies that were brought together in such a short space. I would recommend anyone that likes a little scare or brush with the supernatural to pick this up.

"Alfred Hitchcok Presents..." For some reason, this is exactly what reading Tara Fox Hall's "Just Shadows" reminds me of.

It's not so much that the individual stories aren't all that scary. Some of us just aren't that easy to scare anymore, unless the story features one of those old-fashioned creepy Victorian porcelain dolls with the big glazed eyes and the ugly little dresses and bonnets and...(((((((shudder)))))Thankfully, Just Shadows doesn't have one of those, otherwise I'd have given it ONE star just for creeping me out in the completely wrong way.

What Just Shadows does have however, is a collection of 17 short stories of varying lengths. Some, like the first one are actually pretty clever with a twist so sudden that I actually had to go back and re-read it to make sure I hadn't missed something. Others are so short that it's the very brevity that leaves an unsettling feeling in the back of your mind. And then there are those like the one about the vampire who uses a little girl to bait victims that you actually wish would have gone a little longer. But the best for last is of course the story after which the collection is named. Set in that creepiest setting of all, an "insane ansylum" it's the kind of story that would have made Alfred Hitchcock say at the end of the episode "Boy, I did not see that one coming, did you?"
Just Shadows

Very few writers can do justice to the short horror story, which is surely one of the most difficult of literary forms, but Tara Fox Hall is a master of the art.
Here we have, for the first time, an anthology of her stories collected in one volume. And is it a humdinger! Seventeen delightful vignettes for the horror connoisseur, each one different, each one chilling.
There is the little girl used as vampire bait, the nasty death in the tanning room at the health spa, the demons in the department store and the futuristic vision of a dying world.
Perhaps the most impressive is the very short tale, 'Innovation.' A masterpiece in a few words!
I loved every one of them and could hardly believe it when I came to the end so quickly.
I look forward to reading many more of Ms Hall's stories and recommend her to all lovers of the genre.

Do you like being scared? If you do, this short story collection full of horror stories, many with wicked endings, might be your cup of tea.

This author was a new one for me and her writing grabbed me from the first story. I was not expecting such frank, uncensored evil in a very short story. Her descriptions take you into the story and hold you right there until you have to see how she handled the tale.

The stories range from tales about the end of the world, to monsters in the closet, to tales of vampires and life threatening situations. They are very succinct and succeeded in getting my attention quickly. Some stories could have been fleshed out more and contained more detail, which would have spaced out the horror and made the endings more of a shock. Still this author can write a good, edge-of-your-seat tale with a scary ending in amazingly few words.

Ms. Hall takes your worst nightmares and makes them come true on these pages. R. L. Stine writes "scary" stories for young adults, but I prefer this author's style. She makes them sound believable even though you know they are fantasy. They are subtle, but grab you by the guts.

If you wish to share this with a young adult, I'd recommend it's a mature young adult who won't have nightmares. And, if you have nightmares, you might not want to read it either. True fans of the type of book that makes you hide under your covers will enjoy this anthology.

I first became aware of Tara Fox Hall's writing from her story "The Origin of Fear" published in the "Spellbound 2011" anthology. The story built tension and kept me off balance, only gradually as I read did I come to understand what was happening to the characters. She did and excellent job of maintaining the tension and of presenting the characters and setting to the reader.

In "Just Shadows" she let's her imagination fly and still manages to maintain that balance of plot, characters and setting that I admire in her work. The stories are varied with plots from apocolyptic to vampiric, and from city to country. Settings and characters change drastically but the one constant is Ms. Hall's talent as a story teller. She has a lot to share with her readers, so take the oppoprtunity to spend some time reading her work. I think you'll enjoy every thrill and chill she sends along your spine.
Just Shadows is a deliciously creepy and juicily unsettling read. Each vignette is well written, like a collection of disturbing sculptures -- what at first appears to be an ordinary situation quickly becomes the completely unexpected. Murderers, demons, and ghosts jostle each other for prominence among the pages of Tara Fox Hall's vision of a world turning upside down, sparing only random individuals, as life often does. Reading her anthology over lunch hours was equally a treat as was devouring them at home on my couch. Fans of Stephen King should add Just Shadows to their personal libraries of horror/fantasy fiction -- it's not to be missed.
