I don't know why I love this crazy book so much. Red answered my question about why she never looked up at Malcolm and I think it was a dumb reason. It's not like it would have changed her mindset at the time of having a black husband. Malcolm still would have been a fantasy. I'm in love with Malcolm by the way... just meowrrr! Lol. And this whole story just goes to show you what people do with too much time and money on their hands. These bluebloods are something else.Tags : Shh...Mine (This. Is. Not. Over. ShhMine This Is Not Over Book 1 edition by Shannon Dianne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved this book! The writing style will not be for everyone, and it was a little rough around the edges (I'll get to that in a second) but wowza! I loved how complicated and three dimensional Red is. She was no boring goody-two shoes, that's for sure. She's flawed and real. She makes mistakes, but she eventually figures out the error of her ways. And Malcolm! Gotta love a man who knows what he wants and will do anything to get it. I am waiting anxiously for the sequel!
Now the cons
Girl, get an editor. There were many typos, and a few that took me out of the story. Also, clarity is a writer's best friend. An editor could help clear up some of the clarity issues. There were a few times when I had to go back and re-read a passage to figure out who was talking. This book was too good to be bogged down with these kind of issues!
The ending (the very last few pages) seemed a little rushed, and then it ended abruptly. Even though there's a sequel, it could have ended on more of a BOOM note, to keep us wanting to read more. As of now, the way it's worded is very meh - the story just kind of is over.
Anyway, I'm very glad I read this. I'm definitely adding Shannon Dianne to my list of must-read authors.
First off, in the beginning Danielle is a selfish shallow person who gets married for all the wrong reasons, thus marrying the wrong guy, so yes, I feel that her crumbling marriage was mostly her fault. However, I have no sympathy for Jon, because he only tried making it work AFTER the divorce and AFTER she'd moved on. At least she did try to change before it came to that.
Now for the book's CONS
1. In the very beginning, there's a scene being played out (written in italics) but because none of the characters other than Malcolm had yet been introduced, I had to read over it twice, and still had no idea what they were talking about until a little later on.
2. I was a little bothered when he said that he was first drawn to Red (Danielle) because she was a black person who felt neither subservient or threatened. Just think it could've been phrased better.
3. Every chapter begins with a date. Why does June 30th come after July 29th, only to be followed by July 1st?
4. Why is not explained that Malcolm is having a flashback of one of the letters until afterward (in the middle of basketball game)?
All other editing issues are fairly minor. For a while the writing is not so good, but it got much better by halfway through. I wasn't bothered by Malcolm's stalker behavior because it wasn't harmful. But this book goes to show that when you have money, stalking can be taken to a TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEVEL. These people are off their rockers! In regards to my review title, there is apparently a sequel to be released in April, which I guess is good to know, after being left with a crazy crazy plot twist near the end, and needing to know if Malcolm is going to tell Danielle everything he knows, and what's going to happen to/with their exes. All in all, still glad I read it, and looking forward to the sequel.
No it's not over. The story was brilliantly written. It's told in first person point of view. It reminds me of the Roman Catholic practice of Penance in that much of the dialogue is reflective and confessional. In my mind, the characters are each taking turns in a confession booth, telling their side of the story with vivid scene depictions inserted in the the story telling.
The dimensional characters makes this an interesting read. Danielle (Red) is somewhat of a self absorbed snob. However, she has some redeeming qualities as well. Malcolm reminds me of a younger Fitz (from Scandal). He's privileged and has the makings of a politician. And then there's poor Jon, a pseudo-racist after learning his wife's new boyfriend is Caucasian, a lousy husband but good father.
The plot is rich. A secret admirer, a secret affair, a failing marriage, long awaited love, unrequited love, a stalker, and that's just scratching the surface. The ending will leave you breathless and wanting more. Brilliantly done. This book comes highly recommended.
